Debian and Ubuntu package repositories removed from mate-desktop.org
Thanks to the efforts of the MATE package maintainers for Debian MATE 1.8.1 is available in Debian Jessie (testing) and also Debian backports for Wheezy. As a result of MATE 1.8.1 hitting the Debian testing repositories earlier this year, MATE 1.8.1 is also in the official archive for Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn. The Ubuntu MATE team have recently created a MATE 1.8.1 PPA for Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr at the request of the Ubuntu Technical Board and also a MATE 1.8.1 PPA for Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin

MATE in openSUSE
The openSUSE MATE team is proud to announce the availability of MATE 1.8 for openSUSE. The patterns are not available anymore, and won’t be in the future due to official inclusion of MATE in openSUSE. We can’t support openSUSE 12.2 anymore, MATE requirements are not provided in the right versions in that one. We have changed our schema of repositories, to avoid people having to change their repositories for each update. Now there is just one place, X11:MATE:Current.

Stefano stellt MATE auf der FOSDEM 2014 vor
Am 1. Februar 2014 hielt Stefano Karapetsas seine Präsentation über MATE auf der FOSDEM 2014 ! Die Präsentation macht MATE denjenigen bekannt, welche davon noch nicht gehört haben, und erläutert den Ursprung des Projekts. Zunächst werden die Unterschiede zwischen MATE und anderen herkömmlichen GTK-basierenden Desktop-Umgebungen erörtert. Danach erklärt Stefano, wie MATE sich entwickelt hat, seit es von GNOME2 geforkt wurde. Eine kurze Auswertung der jüngeren Verbesserungen findet statt, gefolgt von einer Übersicht über der MATE-Roadmap und anderen Projekten, die von MATE profitieren, z.B. Sonar , Raspberry Pi und LTSP .

Stefano presents at openSUSE conference
On July 20th 2013 Stefano Karapetsas presented his talk on MATE at openSUSE Conference! The talk introduces MATE to those who haven’t heard of it, explains the reasons for creating MATE, explains the difference with GNOME Classic and GNOME Fallback sessions, and describes the features and changes added after the fork.

MATE and LTSP
There are a lot of people in the world who get access to their GNU/Linux desktops via thin clients, and one of the longest running thin client projects out there is the LTSP project. The MATE desktop offers a fantastic desktop experience on thin clients; fast, stable, and efficient. Libraries, schools, and businesses looking for a GNU/Linux desktop using traditional paradigms their users are used to will find MATE a excellent alternative to going to a Unity/Gnome 3 desktop. As both an LTSP and MATE developer, I put together a short video on some of the developments in both.
